Three-time UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture has accepted an invitation to speak before the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, Dec. 8 in Green Bay, Wisc., according to representatives from Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts. The 44-year-old will be the Packers’ special guest at their game against Oakland at legendary Lambeau Field the following day.
Jay Glazer, a member of the Fox Sports team that covers the NFL, was instrumental in establishing a relationship between the two parties, Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy said.
“Jay and I were watching Randy’s last fight, and we got on to the subject of talking to the players and finding different ways to get your message across to them,” McCarthy said. “I was telling Jay that one of the platforms we like to use is having guest speakers come and talk to the team about relevant subjects or themes.”
Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre, who holds the NFL record for most career touchdown passes (427), is a huge Couture fan, McCarthy said. Favre led the Packers to a Super Bowl championship in 1997 and has thrown for 59,906 yards – the equivalent of 34 miles – over his decorated 17-year career.
“We often talk to our team about being smart and tough football players,” McCarthy said. “In talking with Jay, he recommended Randy as the perfect example of someone who could talk to our players about being smart and tough. His fights over the years exemplify this.”
