Renzo Gracie vs. Frank Shamrock Video

This was the headline EliteXC fight between Renzo Gracie and Frank Shamrock with a controversial ending.

  1. Controversial ending indeed, Frank was disqualified due to knees to the back of the neck. I’m not really sure if there is an actual MMA rule that states no knees on the neck, front or back. The fight was pretty boring overall, Frank’s stand up was superior to Renzo’s but his take down defense was shit. Although Renzo took Frank down, he just stayed on top of Frank as if he was about to give him CPR. With the fight being stopped as a Disqualification, it now gives Showtime a reason for a potential rematch.

  2. I think its B.S. Frank did good on his feet and defended himself on the floor how can you aim for the back of the head on your back. this rule should be a stand up rule only on the floor its a whole other story .

  3. Renzo was playing within the rules. If the rules were similar to the first UFC (no time limit, no stand up reset by referee, no gloves), Shammy would have been eating elbows all night long and probably would have eventually offered his back for a rear naked choke. It is unfortunate that to make a fight palatable to politicians and the mass public, you need to stand them up, put time limits, and add restrictive rules similar to boxing. A lot of this is hype as you can see that both really like each other.

  4. Renzo is a COWARD! Frank barely hit him on the neck; Renzo knew he was going to get knocked out, and to spare the embarrassment he looked for a way out. What happened to the “never give up” crap he talked??!! Like with all the Gracies, MONEY is the key motivator, keeping/getting students is the bottom line.

  5. Standing them up is bull shit. Renzo was working on top positioning himself for a mount and the refs...bring them up...that's BS Shamrock would have continued to get pounded and frustrated until Renzo submitted him. Renzo Gracie a COWARD? I think that shows the level of Intelligence of the previous guys comment...

  6. What was that ideot watching? Frank had a better stand up style,
yes, but he was easly taken down and controlled on the ground. If the rules would have been defined that knees to the back of the head were allowed, Renzo would not of positioned himself to allow the knees to suprise him. Renzo was easly taking Frank down with all of his stand up striking skills. And it was obvious, Frank was no match for Renzo on the ground. Who do you really think wanted out?
Frank knew the rules and what he was doing.

  7. your daddy and frank said are nuts. Did frank look discouraged at all during the fight . No he didnt. Did he look freaked out? No he didnt. He was calm and collective. The guy is as good on the ground as he is standing up. Also watch the fight again, the knee never hit the back of the head it hit below the ear and mostly on the kneck. What a joke. Gracie got hit with a good hit and cried. Sure he could have used his elbows while on top of frank but that would have eventualy led to a submission. I hope there is a rematch cause this time gracie will be totally destroyed.

  8. Renzo won't get destroyed next time. It's unfortunate that BJJ isn't really favored within those rules because it relies on staying on the ground and attaining dominant positions, and a stand-up rule interferes with that. It's also unfortunate that a jerk like Frank clearly violated a rule like no knees to the back of the head even after he was warned about it earlier. That's why he got DQd instead of Renzo forfeiting.

Do you think that if it wasn't a rule Renzo wouldn't have done the same? Or that he would have used a different position that protected the back of his head better?

Renzo dominated the match up until the knee to the back of the head. Just because it didn't look like anything was going on doesn't mean he wasn't dominating: Preventing your opponent from doing anything to do (aside from rules breaking)is dominating.

  9. You've got to be kidding me? Frank was killing Renzo with knee's to the ribs for one thing and if you watch right before Renzo took Frank down the last time he got hit with a solid punch that rocked him. The hit is what made him fall and bring Frank down with him. Frank almost had him in a choke and when Renzo got out of it he move right into the striking distance of Frank's knee's. Frank did NOT knee him in the back of the head. If you watch it kindred is right. Frank caught him on the ear and on the back of the neck. If you watch the post fight Renzo is coughing alot. I've never had to cough because I got hit in the back of the head but taking a few knee's to the rib's....What do you think?

  10. I am not biased to either fighter, but it did appear to me that Renzo was "acting" hurt and that led to the DQ. I have not been able to find out whether or not he was actually injured. I am willing to bet he went home that night. Herb Dean also seemed unsure of his call afterward. It appeared that he wasn't sure if it warranted a DQ, but once that was suggested he agreed.

  12. WOW!! Anyone with any sense knows that the Shamrocks are cocky showboaters....
and for someone to say that Renzo Gracie is a coward? I mean, come on!! Did you see his fight where his elbow was dislocated and he wanted to have it popped back in place and continue fighting? Also, in Frank Shamrocks latest fight, he was destroyed by Cung Le, someone that shamrock claimed he would destroy! And what about Shamrocks remark that "I knock people out, it's what I do"....
he only has 2 k.o.'s in his career...
