(CP) - Canadian mixed martial arts champion Georges St. Pierre has signed a new six-fight deal that will make him one of the top-five earners in the UFC, his manager confirmed Sunday.
While the UFC only has five champions, it boasts some high-priced talent without a title in the shape of heavyweights Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic and Randy (The Natural) Couture, light-heavyweight Tito (Huntington Beach Bad Boy) Ortiz and former welterweight champion Matt Hughes.
St. Pierre had two fights left on his existing contract when he dethroned longtime title-holder Hughes at UFC 65 in Sacramento, Calif., on Nov. 18.
Both St. Pierre's camp and the UFC were keen to sign him to a upgraded long-term deal in the wake of his championship win.
The 25-year-old from Montreal is already one of UFC's most popular fighters. At 13-1, with an impressive all-round set of skills, he is exciting to watch inside the cage. Outside, he is well-spoken and classy.
"(He's done) very well. We're very happy," manager Stephane Patry said about the new deal.
UFC fighter pay is hard to gauge, since the privately owned organization does not share financial details.
According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, St. Pierre's purse for beating Hughes was US$58,000 - $29,000 plus a $29,000 win bonus. But for marquee fighters, the purse only tells part of the financial story, with contracts containing other lucrative bonuses and clauses.
St. Pierre was to defend his title Saturday against Matt (The Terror) Serra at UFC 67 in Las Vegas but the bout was postponed after St. Pierre hurt his knee wrestling in training.
St. Pierre is back training but he has not yet been cleared to spar. He is due to see a specialist on Feb. 8 to have his knee checked out.
"We have seen specialists now and then and they don't think he will need surgery, so that's why we are very confident," Patry said from Montreal.
St. Pierre sprained his posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments.
Patry says St. Pierre will now meet Serra on April 7 at UFC 69 in Houston if his health permits.
Champion and manager are both slated to attend UFC 67. Montreal middleweight Patrick Cote, another of Patry's charges, fights Scott Smith on the undercard of the middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Travis Lutter.
Lutter defeated Cote in November in the middleweight finale to Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter reality TV show.
