UFC 66 breaks gate record
Event rakes in almost $5.4 million at box officeNBCSports.com staff reportPosted: Jan.21, 2007, 9:42 pm EST; Updated: Jan.21, 2007, 9:46 pm EST.
The rematch between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz that took place at UFC 66 was hyped as the biggest U.S. mixed martial arts event of all-time, and it lived up to the hype. The live gate at Las Vegas' MGM Grand was $5,397,300, according to figures released by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
The gate receipts were the largest ever for an MMA event, topping the $3.4 million earned in February 2006 in the last fight of the Liddell-Randy Couture trilogy. The figure trails only Oscar De La Hoya's May 2006 fight with Ricardo Mayorga for the highest-grossing gate of the year. That fight made $7.6 million at the box office.
Because of pay-per-view receipts, it is likely that UFC's event grossed more than De La Hoya-Mayorga. While the boxing match sold around 700,000 pay-per-view buys, over 1 million were expected for UFC 66.
Liddell defeated Ortiz via third-round TKO in the main event.
